Bridge Assignment
The Henderson Waves Bridge, in Southern Cordillera, Singapore, was built to span the Henderson Road Highway. It is a beam bridge made for pedestrian use. It was built during 2006-2008, and made only out of wood and steel. The bridge was made to look like the shape of a snake. The LED lights that illuminate the bridge emphasize the curvature of the bridge. The bridge was designed to fit in with the nature surrounding it.

What Will Future Jobs Look Like?
Andrew Mcafee begins the TED Talk by asking a question: In the near future, will our jobs be taken by machines? Later, he describes two types of people in the U.S. These two types of people are Teds and Bills. Teds are people with a college education, usually lawyers and doctors, while Bills are people without a college education. Mcafee continues by listing a few statistics: percent of Teds and Bills that held a job, percent of Teds and Bills that had a happy marriage, and many more. All of these statistics went in favor of the Teds, for example, Teds had happier marriages than Bills. In the end, Mcafee says that the majority of jobs taken by machines will be Bills’ jobs, not Teds’. But, after a point, when technology improves significantly, even Teds’ jobs will be taken. |
The Three Camps of Manufacturing
Camp 1 Manufacturing doesn’t matter. The global economy depends on jobs based on knowledge and services. Camp 2 Manufacturing matters. If we reduce taxes, regulations, and burdens, manufacturing will surge. Since the U.S. manufacturing environment is the most expensive in the world, cost must be reduced. Camp 3 Manufacturing is key to survival of global economy. |
Flexible Fabricating
Flexible fabricating seems very useful and ingenious. I find it surprising that we have machines that can create physical three dimensional objects of any shape from a digital model. Because of flexible fabricating, work communication will start to lose importance. As more machines enter the workplace with more new technology, work communication will lose some of its importance. |
Two Very Interesting Articles:
Rethinking Robots New machines and robots not only dramatically increase production and amount of sales, but also create more indirect jobs of manufacturing. This means that new technology won’t hurt us. Manufacturing in America: Making things right As industry and manufacturing evolves with new, innovative methods, industry is improving efficiency levels. |
Extra Credit Ideas
Idea 1
For the first project, I hope to build a bridge that I designed in West Point Bridge Designer.
Idea 2
For the second project, I want to build a machine of some sort. This machine will be programmed to complete a certain task.
Idea 3
For my third project, I want to design something that has to do with electronics, like a circuit, for example.

Computers TED Talk
This was an interesting TED Talk. George Dyson showed us some of the research journals of the people that invented the computer. In the talk, he compared the massive pieces of machinery that they had then with the tiny handheld devices we have now. My phone has more than 64 times the memory that many of the first computers had. Dyson talked about the people that invented the computer. These guys were at the top of their perspective fields. It was amazing how these people came together to create one of the world's best inventions of all time. He talked about Barrocelli, who was ahead of his time, and may even be ahead of our time now. He mentioned Barrocelli's universe, which I didn't quite understand.
I enjoyed this TED Talk thoroughly. It was interesting to see these people's journals. These people never knew that we would see their journals, so they wrote things in there that they wouldn't tell other people. It was cool because the scientists had other sides to their lives. They had a sense of humor. I enjoyed the part when one of the guys found a mouse that had died in the computer, and he made jokes about it. This was an enjoying TED Talk, and I learned much about computers while watching.

Robotics
I liked this topic. I remember that TED Talk we had a long time ago. I agree with him in part that robots may take over many jobs, but I do not think they would be high-paying jobs. Most high-paying jobs require further education, and this would take more advanced technology. Since robotics is advancing, robots are very likely to be able to take low-paying menial labor jobs. This will cause more people to strive for higher education and get jobs that won't be replaced by robots.
