Getting back to work

5/7/2017

We have a few items left on our agenda before the end of the semester.
Monday: I am out in the morning and several of you are taking the Lit EOC. Class is displaced to across the hall in 517. Please get the laptop cart from Mr. Walstead and work on your websites. You can also start thinking about your final project, which you will have class time to work on week after next and will present Monday and Tuesday of finals. You can choose almost anything interesting to you, with a few requirements. You can perform a scientific experiment, create an item that has objectives that can be measured, research a topic and/or do something of service to Wheeler Magnet. Some past examples include a video about freshmen year at Wheeler Magnet, a promo video for Wheeler Magnet, Google Doodles, etc.  You could learn some basic CAD and 3D print a small medallion, research photography and display pictures that demonstrate what you've learned, create a website of summer opportunities, etc. I'll go over this on Tuesday/Wednesday (depending on whether everyone is back from EOC on Tuesday.)

What We Have Left:
1. Student Websites
2. Data work, excel, using data to answer questions, and visualizing data
3. Comparing the Scientific Method and Engineering Design Process
4. Final Independent Choice Project

Use the file of data above and Excel to complete the following.
FORMAT THE SPREADSHEET
  1. Remove the Average Monthly Disposable Salary data from column I and insert it into column F (shift existing columns to the right)
  2. Make the formatting to the header row the same as the Monthly Disposable Salary (use format painter)
  3. Match the formatting of the data in the Monthly Disposable Salary column the same as the rest of the data
  4. Calculate population density for each country/region
  5. Calculate Internet Penetration. Use an if statement so that if the Internet Users value is n/a, the Internet Penetration data is also n/a. Alter the format of the cell so that it automatically displays as a percentage to 2 decimal places
  6. Find the average for all columns and place that below the data (line 274)
  7. Adjust the scaling of the worksheet, (1 sheet wide by 5 sheets long), so that it could print legibly. DO NOT PRINT – this will be checked digitally
ANALYZE THE DATA
  1. Sort and filter the data to explore
  2. Notice patterns and/or trends in the data
  3. Develop 5 questions you can “ask” of this data
  4. Extract information to display “answers” to your 5 questions
  5. Create visualizations (charts/graphs) for each of your 5 questions
PRESENT THE DATA
Using  Google Slides, create a deliverable of your findings.  The deliverable should include the following components and be submitted to Google Classroom, titled as follows T: Data Analysis-Names (example: Data Analysis – Maloney+Walstead)
  • Title Slide — Title and both partners’ names
  • Overview — Overarching question that can be answered by the 5 smaller questions and that answers a thesis statement about information as a whole.
  • Question 1 — State question, display visualization that shows answer
  • Question 2 — ….
  • Question 3 — ….
  • Question 4 — ….
  • Question 5 — ….
  • Conclusion to be made for your thesis statement
  • References — provide links to your sources used including the URL of the data set
