INTERESTING Bridges and Bridge design constraints

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

The Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge located in Ireland connects the Ireland mainland to the tiny Carrick Island. The bridge is a rope suspension bridge and spans for twenty meters and is thirty meters above rocks below. Some of the main design constraints applied to this is the integrity of the ropes and their strength. The engineers must have had to think about the average amount of people that would cross at a time and use the factor of safety to maximize security and prevent anyone from falling into the depths below. Some other design constraints apply to weather and the stresses applied to the bridge. These stresses can include torsion, compression, tension and any other stresses that might be applied to the bridge.

I felt that one of the most important things talked about in the TED Talk was that engineering is always changing and that the young people today are going to take up the innovations of tomorrow. I thought that that point was interesting because I am a young person and that what he said will really be true in my life. I also found that the analogy of the Pantheon to innovations today was interesting because of how great and complex the Pantheon was two thousand years ago and how we will continue to advance and form our own modern "Pantheons".
I think the the TED Talk is going to affect me as I move on through my life because, with that idea of progress in mind, I will try my very best to be as much of a part of building that next "Pantheon" then before. I conclusion, the TED Talk really helped me understand the significance of engineering to human society and will lead me to become a better engineer.
