"THe health of the eye seems to demand the Horizon.  We are never tired so long as we can see far enough " -Ralph Waldo Emerson

March 6, 2015: Robotics may very well be the future. Robots are already present in manufacturing. It is only a matter of time before aspects of the manufacturing process are fully automated with robots. It would also seem that robotics as many applications in other aspects of society. New medical practices and military applications now involve more advanced robotic systems. Along with new applications of robotics, there are new developments of artificial intelligence. Now we have robots that can move for themselves, or demonstrate a limited way of computational thinking.  Although some people may believe that advancements in artificial intelligence may lead to humanity's downfall, I believe that is unlikely that this will happen because it seems that AI intelligence would still shackled by programming, so it can't threaten us. If an AI intelligence can threaten us, then it must surely have to rewrite it's programming, which indicates that robotics and AIs can evolve, but for now this doesn't seem possible. For now, we determine what makes a robot a robot.

In the TED talk, McAfee talks about how the world economy will eventually become automatized with robotics. People believe that this will create fewer jobs and be detrimental tot he economy, but McAfee says that automatization is not going to be problem. He simply states that the current economic plan, we already follow, should still work out. The world is experiencing a polarization of classes, and so the middle class is disappearing. People who are college educated will be more likely to succeed. McAfee proposes that we start producing more college educated people rather than people for the labor force. If we encourage new ideas and entrepreneurship, with more college educated people, then the economy should be fine. In other words, McAfee is not concerned with automatisation because he believes that we will solve the problems associated with it.

There are three camps, that pertain to smart manufacturing. The first group believes that manufacturing in the US is not important because we now mostly specialize in things like data analysis. The second group believes that manufacturing is important to the US, and that we should reduce taxes, regulations, and health care in order to stimulate the creation of new jobs by making it less expensive to manufacture. The third group also believes that manufacturing is important in the US, and that we should develop new technologies and automatization to help manufacturing grow. I would place myself in the third group because I believe that we cannot move forward if we do not develop new technologies and that automatization is inevitable, so we must prepare.

So the article “A Revolution in the Making” explains how industries are becoming more and more computer based. Communication between between industrial installations and engineers or managers, is slowly becoming more modernized with instant notification via iPad, phone, or computer. Instead of going down a to a plant, factory, etc. to solve problems, businesses can now control and maintain their establishments from home using their mobile devices. The article also talks about how people are looking into flexible fabricating, where products are 3D printed from digital models. I think this is a more efficient method of industry because it wastes less time and money, and it could further increase the level of mass production, that we currently enjoy today. As for this new method of communication, I believe that it is also vastly more efficient because it requires less effort and provides more flexibility.

On the Smart Manufacturing website, there is and article about how President Obama wants to set up more institutes, dedicated to to coming up with new innovative materials and designs. Teams in different cities are competing so that an institute can be established in their city. This article is interesting because it talks about the president is promoting innovative design. This seems productive in regards to future development.

There is another article on the Smart Manufacturing website that talks about how a third of the population fears robotics and automatization. They either fear that robots will take away jobs or that they'll rise up and destroy humanity, yet the article
